eero 6 Pro may be renaming devices as duplicate hostnames
A home network with three units started showing warnings that device names were already in use. The devices do not actually have duplicate names, but names keep getting extra numbers added, such as “ (873).” The problem affects more than Macs, including HomePods and a printer.
Devices using fixed are not affected. Changing the device names back only works for a short time before they change again.
Restarting the network did not fix it, and changing DNS settings did not help. The eero version in use is 7.15.1.
Key points
- An network is repeatedly marking device names as duplicates.
- The name can gain large number suffixes, such as “ (873).”
- HomePods and a printer are affected too, so the issue is not limited to one Mac.
- Devices with fixed are not affected.
- Restarting the network and changing DNS settings did not solve the problem.
