Homelab storage prices have gotten out of hand, one user vents

A Reddit user recalls that two years ago they planned to build their own NAS, a Jellyfin , and a couple of for . Back then they held off buying storage, expecting 16TB drives to get cheaper and making do with an external in the meantime. Now they say they can't even justify or afford 8TB drives, let alone 16TB, and they'd need at least three of them to get started.

RAM prices and the used-parts market are also described as painful right now. What was once a dream of hoarding an offline copy of Wikipedia and WikiHow "just in case" has turned into having to decide which TV shows to delete and which raw photo files to keep.

Key points

  • Delayed buying storage for a NAS//VM setup two years ago, expecting prices to drop
  • Now says even 8TB drives are hard to justify, and 16TB is out of reach
  • Needs at least three drives to get the setup started
  • RAM prices and the used hardware market are also cited as expensive
  • Gave up on hoarding a full offline Wikipedia backup and is now deleting files to make room
