Avoiding a $25 fee grew into a 40-service home server
A stock analysis app moved needed features from a $4.99 plan to a $29.99 monthly plan, so a replacement was built at home instead. Over three years, that project grew into a quiet setup running about 40 services, household systems, and a voice assistant that still works without an internet connection.
One RTX 3060 runs a and gives distinct personalities to about 1,800 bots in the original version of World of Warcraft. Recurring cloud costs are now close to zero, while the entire setup uses about 161 watts on average.
The first serious server was a Dell R710, which offered strong performance at a low purchase price but produced a great deal of noise. The system expanded gradually as more online services were replaced with locally operated ones.
