Choosing JBOD or a NAS when a small home server runs out of space

The current is a Lenovo M910Q with a Core i5-7500, 32GB of memory, a 256GB NVMe SSD, a 1TB , and 2.5-gigabit . It runs Jellyfin, HA, and on ZimaOS, mainly for video playback and phone backups, but its storage is now full.

A separate HP EliteDesk with a Ryzen 2400G and 32GB of memory runs and BeamNG through AMP. Three unused 4TB and one 5TB could provide more storage.

The choice is between attaching them through a JBOD or buying a UGREEN DXP4800GT NAS and possibly combining both servers. Some Blu-ray MP4 files briefly stutter, although the low-cost TCL TV may be the weak point rather than the server.

Key points

  • The has filled its 1TB .
  • Three 4TB drives and one 5TB drive are available for reuse.
  • The main options are a JBOD or a UGREEN DXP4800GT NAS.
  • Combining the media and game servers is optional, not required for adding storage.
  • The TCL TV may be causing the Blu-ray MP4 playback stutters.
