Fable 5 moves to pay-per-use billing, users split on cost

An update on Claude's support page extended access to Fable 5 by five days, through July 12, with no explanation given. That same date is when Fable 5 is set to leave flat-rate subscription plans entirely and become available only through metered, token-based billing charged on top of a subscription. The community is worried this could backfire: competing models like GPT-5.6 and Grok 4.5 offer comparable or better performance under flat-rate plans, and forcing Fable 5 onto pay-per-use pricing risks pushing users toward those alternatives.

Real-world reports are mixed. One user said a task modifying an existing calendar feature took Fable 5 twenty-five hours and three million tokens to finish. Another ran a head-to-head test — adding a RAG debugger to the 400,000-line Open WebUI codebase and building a browser-based Clash Royale-style game — and found that Sonnet 5, despite being marketed as the cheaper option, actually cost more than Fable 5 for the same work.

On the other hand, several users praised Fable 5's output quality for complex tasks like legal research and long-form project planning, calling its writing more precise and its reasoning noticeably better than Opus. In Cursor, when Fable 5 trips a safety filter, the editor automatically switches the conversation to Opus 4.8 without asking first, which frustrated users who want to be told about the block instead of having their model silently swapped mid-task. One person said this auto-switch burned through a large chunk of their €200 plan while running a long project-planning session.
